Essential Hiking Gear List

Essential Hiking Gear List, Pihka Outdoors

Essential hiking gear list for a one-week summer hike in Finland. Planning a one-week hiking adventure in the Finnish wilderness? Great choice! Hiking in Finland offers peace, fresh air, and unforgettable moments in nature. But success in the backcountry depends heavily on what you pack. Here’s a clear and practical gear list for summer hikes in Finland, based on years of experience in the north.

Equipment

  • Backpack (50–70 L)
Comfortable and well-fitted. Big enough to carry everything, but not oversized.
  • Sleeping bag
Three-season model with a comfort rating around +5 to 0°C. Use same ratig also in the summer time!
  • Sleeping mat
Insulated and comfortable. An inflatable or self-inflating mat works best for multi-day hikes.
  • Tent
Lightweight, weatherproof and well-ventilated – especially important in mosquito season.
  • Camping stove + fuel
A gas stove is most common. Don’t forget a windscreen and heat shield.
  • Cookware + utensils
A small pot, spork, mug, and maybe a food thermos – keep it simple.

Clothing (Layered System)

  • Base layer (merino wool or technical fabric)
Wicks moisture and dries fast. Wear close to the skin.
  • Mid layer (fleece, wool or light insulation)
Adds warmth, especially during breaks or cooler evenings. Downjacket is a good choice also in the summer time. Remember, the weather might be unpredictable.
  • Outer layer (rain jacket and pants)
Windproof, waterproof, and breathable. Crucial for protection in changing weather. Goretex clothing gives it all in one!
  • Hiking trousers
Lightweight, quick-drying, and mosquito-proof. Popular brands include Fjällräven or Revolution Race.
  • Hiking boots
Waterproof and broken in. Lighter models may work on easy terrain, but ankle support is a plus when heading to the proper wilderness.
  • Camp clothes + wool socks
Dry, comfy clothes for evenings: wool sweater, leggings, beanie, and warm socks.

Food and Water in Finland

  • Dehydrated meals or easy camping food
Lightweight and high-energy. Instant oatmeal, expedition food, trail mix, and bars are ideal.
  • Water bottles or hydration bladder (2–3 L)
You can refill from streams, but water purification tablets or filters are a good backup. Lapland is usually clean and safe with water sources.

Small Essentials

  • Map and compass / GPS
Paper maps never run out of battery. Trails can be unmarked in remote areas.
  • Mosquito repellent and head net
Absolutely essential in summer. A head net will keep you sane.
  • First aid kit
Include plasters, painkillers, blister care, and tweezers for ticks. Emergency number in Finland is 112.
  • Multitool or small knife
Useful for cooking, repairs, and general camp use.
  • Headlamp + spare batteries
Even during the Midnight Sun, you might need light inside your tent or on cloudy days.
  • Fire-starting gear
Waterproof matches or a lighter. Check fire regulations before making a campfire.
