March 13th – 18th

Day 1 – Arrival in Ylläs

Arrive at Kittilä Airport or Kolari Train Station, both about 35 km from Ylläs. A bus, taxi or Pihka Outdoor’s private transport takes you to your accommodation in Ylläs (twin room, single room available for an extra fee). In the evening we enjoy dinner together and go through our adventure plan and safety briefing.

For travellers arriving at separate times we suggest the direct bus transfer from Kittilä airport to Lapland Hotel Saaga (35 km). We can organise airport transfers for an additional fee of 150 EUR. For groups of minimum three persons the transfer is included.

Day 2 – Up into the Arctic

After breakfast we drive 3.5 hours to Kilpisjärvi, the starting point of the ski trek. Here we pack our pulkas and set off on skis. The first day includes a gradual ascent onto the tundra, crossing frozen lakes and passing snowy fells. We spend the night at Saarijärvi reserved wilderness hut (no electricity or running water, dormitory bunk beds). Distance: 12 km.

Day 3 – The easiest day

After breakfast we tidy the hut and leave everything as it was and make sure to collect all our own trash – leave no trace. We ski through a stunning valley covered in all-white, following a marked route. Here you can spot tracks of Arctic birds, reindeers or even wolverine. In the afternoon we reach the Kuonjar wilderness hut. In the evening, if skies are clear, the Northern Lights are very likely to appear. Distance: 9 km.

Day 4 –Remote wilderness in untouched snow

Today we head off-trails. The scenery with untouched snow and small mountains is just stunning. We keep the pace slow, the main idea is to enjoy the surroundings and be at peace. This is true wilderness where you won’t see another human soul. The last three kilometres we ski across a remote lake and follow a marked snowmobile route to the Termisjärvi wilderness cabin. Distance: 17 km.

Day 5 – Back to Kilpisjärvi and Ylläs

On the last day we head back to Kilpisjärvi village, following a snowmobile route. After reaching the village we pack the pulkas in the trailer and drive back to Ylläs (3,5 hrs drive). Check in at Lapland Hotel Saaga and head for a well-earned spa visit with a traditional Finnish sauna. In the evening we gather together for the last dinner at the hotel restaurant and exchange thoughts of new discoveries about ourselves. Distance: 15 km.

Day 6 – Until next time!

Breakfast & Check-out in Ylläs, Finnish Lapland. End of adventure with lasting memories.

The nearest airport is Kittilä Airport, 35 km away, and Kolari train station is 37 km away. Both have bus connections to Ylläs. You can also book a private transfer through us for €150 – ask for more details.

  • Two nights in a quality accommodation in Ylläsjärvi (two persons/room), three nights in wilderness huts (dorm).
  • All food (breakfast, lunch, dinner, small snacks). Dinner at the accommodation on two evenings.

This women only ski tour is designed to be accessible for beginners, so no previous cross country skiing experience is required. You will learn everything step by step in a supportive and encouraging group.

A good basic level of fitness is still important. You should feel comfortable walking around 10 km in a day, similar to hiking with a 15 kg backpack. The effort is steady rather than intense, and we move at a pace that suits the group.

The terrain is not technically extreme, but snow conditions can vary. On firm snow, skiing feels smooth and flowing. In deeper, fresh snow, pulling the pulka becomes slower and requires more effort. These changing conditions are part of the Arctic experience.

On average, we ski around six hours per day, including regular breaks. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should enjoy being active outdoors for several hours and feel ready for a meaningful physical challenge in a supportive environment.

  • Ski equipment: fell skis, poles, boots, pulka for gear, storm goggles, down jacket if needed
  • Accommodation before and after the hike (comfortable hotel, cabin or B&B), nights in twin rooms, extra charge for single room
  • Accommodation during ski adventure in dorm style wilderness cabins
  • Dinner & breakfast at accommodation upon arrival and after the hike

What to expect on this Women only nordic backcountry ski tour?

This women only nordic backcountry ski tour from hut-to-hut takes you into the open fell landscape of the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area near Kilpisjärvi in northern Lapland. The environment is vast, almost treeless and truly Arctic.

You will ski appx. 10 to 17 km per day while pulling your personal gear in own pulka. This gives you a realistic introduction to multi day winter expedition, but in a calm and structured setting. No previous cross-country skiing experience is required. Everything is taught step by step, and the pace is steady and adjusted to the group.

We use stable fell skis, a combination of traditional cross-country and downhill skis, suitable for ski expedition. Comfortable leather boots and climbing skins in the bottom of the ski makes pulka pulling easier and help on uphill sections. We move through partly marked routes and partly untracked snow, creating our own paths.

Nights are spent in simple wilderness huts without electricity or running water. We sleep in shared dorm style rooms in warm sleeping bags, with the stove heating the space. Evenings are quiet, peaceful and unhurried, often shared over meals, conversation and candlelight. If the sky is clear at night time, there is a strong chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

This tour is well suited for active women who want to challenge themselves a bit in a supportive group, without competition or pressure. It is an empowering introduction to Arctic winter travel and often a first step toward longer and more demanding adventures.

Basic physical fitness level is enough

This women only Arctic experience is designed to be beginner friendly, and no previous backcountry skiing experience is required.

A good basic level of fitness is still important. The daily effort is roughly comparable to hiking around 10 km with a 15 kg backpack. The terrain is not technically steep, but snow conditions can vary. On hard packed snow the skiing feels smooth and steady, while deep fresh snow can make pulling the pulka slower and more physically demanding.

On average we ski around six hours per day, including regular breaks. The pace is calm and adapted to the group, and the focus is on steady progress rather than speed or performance.
