Hut-to-hut ski expedition – Arctic ski adventure to the highest point of Finland
Hut-to-hut ski expedition to the highest point of Finland, Halti (1324m)
This is a demanding all-inclusive hut-to-hut ski expedition in the remote wilderness of Kilpisjärvi, Northern Finland.
For seven days, you travel on skis across vast open fells, pulling your own pulka through changing snow conditions and staying in remote wilderness huts. The objective is clear: to reach Finland’s highest point, Halti (1324 m), under your own power – weather permitting.
Daily distances range from 12 to 20 km depending on terrain and conditions. The landscape lies mostly above the treeline: exposed, powerful and quiet. Weather can shift quickly. Wind, snowfall and visibility are real factors.
This is proper Arctic winter adventure.

Hut-to-hut ski expedition in Lapland – enviroment is rough but beautiful:
This expedition happens in the vast Käsivarsi Wilderness Area near the Norwegian and Sweden border. Area is one of the most remote winter regions in Finland.
There is no reliable phone connection. No infrastructure beyond wilderness huts. The terrain is open tundra and rolling fell highlands stretching toward Scandinavian mountains.
Wildlife tracks may appear in the snow: reindeer, ptarmigan, wolverine or Arctic fox.
On clear nights, the absence of light pollution offers excellent chances to witness the Aurora Borealis, (Northern lights).
Logistics and itinerary:
The expedition begins and ends with a quality accommodation night for preparation and recovery.
Well before departure, we schedule a personal video call with the team to ensure proper preparation and equipment choices. You bring personal clothing according to our packing list; all technical winter gear is provided by Pihka Outdoors.
Each day you ski with backcountry fell skis designed for this terrain. Climbing skins assist on ascents and can be used throughout the expedition.
At the end of the journey, we return to Kilpisjärvi and transfer to Ylläs (approx. 3.5 hours) for the final night in comfort. Sauna, farewell dinner and a good company!
How demanding is this ski expedition?
This expedition is physically demanding.
You will ski multiple consecutive days while pulling your own pulka. Good overall fitness and regular training are expected.
Previous cross-country skiing experience is helpful but not mandatory. Skiing pace is steady rather than fast, and you will learn the necessary techniques during the first days.
In this area Arctic winter conditions are real. Temperatures may drop to –20°C with wind, or shift to milder sunny days. Storms can develop quickly and plans must adapt accordingly.
This expedition is best suited for physically active travellers who seek challenge, resilience and meaningful achievement. Also perfect option for solo travellers.
