Departure dates 2026

March 29th – April 6th.

Day 1.

Arriving in Kittilä airport/Kolari train station, night at accommodation (twin room, extra fee for single room) in Ylläs. We enjoy dinner together and conduct a safety briefing. Chance to do last minute shopping.

Day 2.

A good breakfast and transport to the starting point in Kilpisjärvi. Pack the pulkas and start the arctic adventure on fell skis. The first skiing day includes a fair amount of slow ascending to the open arctic tundra, crossing frozen lakes and passing beautiful fells. We stay the night at Saarijärvi reserved wilderness hut, without electricity or running water. Sleeping is in a dorm in bunk beds. Distance: about 12 km.

Day 3.

We pack our sleds and continue our adventure after breakfast. Today is a bit longer, around 18 km of skiing, in open arctic terrain. We stop along the way for lunch and continue to Meeko reserved wilderness hut for the night. Keep an eye on the sky, as the northern lights are very likely to appear whenever there is no cloud cover.

Day 4.

Continuing our journey through snow and ice in remote wilderness. After 16-18 km of skiing we get a well earned rest at Halti reserved hut. Keep and eye on the surrounding snow for tracks of wolverine, arctic fox or reindeers.

Day 5.

Today we leave the pulkas at the hut, a day of free skiing! We ski to the summit of the highest point in Finland, fell Halti. Admire the mountain views in every direction with nothing but wilderness in sight. In case of bad weather we may skip the summit, and instead relax at the hut or ski in the surrounding area for the day. We spend another night here.

Day 6.

After breakfast we prepare ourselves for a lovely day of skiing back down to Meeko Valley, to have a rest at reserved hut, 16 km.

Day 7.

Today we head properly off-trail. We climb up from the Meeko Valley to see the surrounding area and then start heading into the wild, making our own path. Skiing across the tundra you might as well be in Greenland or close to the South Pole, the views are very similar. After about 20 km of skiing with pulkas we spend the night at Termisjärvi wilderness hut, reserved for our group only. This hut, by a frozen lake, is one of our personal favourites.

Day 8.

Last day of ski adventure! We head back to civilisation in Kilpisjärvi, skiing about 15km on trail. We pack the car and drive back to Ylläs (3,5 hrs drive). Check in at accommodation (hotel/B&B in twin rooms), good wash and traditional Finnish sauna. We have a good well earned dinner together and plan the next expedition together. 100 km expedition completed!

Day 9.

Breakfast & Check-out. End of the best experience of your life.

The nearest airport is Kittilä Airport, 35 km away, and Kolari train station is 37 km away. Both have bus connections to Ylläs. You can also book a private transfer through us for €150 – ask for more details.

  • Two nights in a quality accommodation in Ylläsjärvi (two persons/room), three nights in wilderness huts (dorm).
  • All food (breakfast, lunch, dinner, small snacks). Dinner at the hotel on two evenings.

Daily distances are 15 km – 30km, and everyone pulls their own pulk (weight appx. 20kg-40kg) through the remote Lapland wilderness. While we don’t recommend this as your very first winter holiday, no prior skiing background is required. With a good physical condition you are able to join this tour. You should be ready to move 5-9 hours/day.

You’ll quickly learn to use our special fell skis — a hybrid between cross-country and alpine skis — with robust, supportive leather boots. Climbing skins are usually used at the bottom of the ski, making ascents with the pulk manageable.

  • Skiing equipment, such as fell skis, poles, boots, pulka for gear, goggles, down jacket if needed
  • Accommodation before and after the expedition (comfortable hotel, cabin or B&B), nights in twin rooms, extra charge for single room
  • Accommodation during ski adventure in dorm style wilderness cabins
  • Dinner & breakfast at accommodation upon arrival and after the hike
  • Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for each day on trail
  • Clothing & Gear list
  • Pihka Outdoors professional wilderness guide

  • Own travel and accident insurance (mandatory on this trek)

Description

Hut-to-hut ski expedition – Arctic ski adventure to the highest point of Finland

Hut-to-hut ski expedition to the highest point of Finland, Halti (1324m)

This is a demanding all-inclusive hut-to-hut ski expedition in the remote wilderness of Kilpisjärvi, Northern Finland.

For seven days, you travel on skis across vast open fells, pulling your own pulka through changing snow conditions and staying in remote wilderness huts. The objective is clear: to reach Finland’s highest point, Halti (1324 m), under your own power – weather permitting.

Daily distances range from 12 to 20 km depending on terrain and conditions. The landscape lies mostly above the treeline: exposed, powerful and quiet. Weather can shift quickly. Wind, snowfall and visibility are real factors.

This is proper Arctic winter adventure.

Hut-to-hut ski expedition facts:

  • Over 100 km of self-propelled Arctic backcountry skiing across vast open tundra
  • Summit objective: the highest point of Finland, Halti (1324 m), weather permitting
  • Wilderness huts reserved for nights. No electricity, no running water – authentic Nordic winter hut life
  • Wilderness brings clarity – your mind may experience a lasting shift
  • 9 days total: 7 days skiing in the Arctic wilderness
  • 2 nights in quality accommodation (2 persons per room) before and after the expedition. 6 nights in shared wilderness huts (dorm-style)
  • Daily distances typically 12–20 km depending on conditions
  • Pull your own pulka with personal gear
  • Small expedition team: min 3 – max 8 participants
  • All-inclusive: logistics, food, winter gear and professional guiding

This expedition is suitable for you if:

  • You are physically active and train regularly
  • You are comfortable skiing 5–7 consecutive days in winter conditions
  • You are ready to pull your own pulka with personal gear
  • You are motivated by challenge rather than comfort
  • You seek something meaningful and demanding, not a standard winter holiday

Hut-to-hut ski expedition in Lapland – enviroment is rough but beautiful:

This expedition happens in the vast Käsivarsi Wilderness Area near the Norwegian and Sweden border. Area is one of the most remote winter regions in Finland.

There is no reliable phone connection. No infrastructure beyond wilderness huts. The terrain is open tundra and rolling fell highlands stretching toward Scandinavian mountains.

Wildlife tracks may appear in the snow: reindeer, ptarmigan, wolverine or Arctic fox.

On clear nights, the absence of light pollution offers excellent chances to witness the Aurora Borealis, (Northern lights).

Logistics and itinerary:

The expedition begins and ends with a quality accommodation night for preparation and recovery.

Well before departure, we schedule a personal video call with the team to ensure proper preparation and equipment choices. You bring personal clothing according to our packing list; all technical winter gear is provided by Pihka Outdoors.

Each day you ski with backcountry fell skis designed for this terrain. Climbing skins assist on ascents and can be used throughout the expedition.

At the end of the journey, we return to Kilpisjärvi and transfer to Ylläs (approx. 3.5 hours) for the final night in comfort. Sauna, farewell dinner and a good company!

How demanding is this ski expedition?

This expedition is physically demanding.

You will ski multiple consecutive days while pulling your own pulka. Good overall fitness and regular training are expected.

Previous cross-country skiing experience is helpful but not mandatory. Skiing pace is steady rather than fast, and you will learn the necessary techniques during the first days.

In this area Arctic winter conditions are real. Temperatures may drop to –20°C with wind, or shift to milder sunny days. Storms can develop quickly and plans must adapt accordingly.

This expedition is best suited for physically active travellers who seek challenge, resilience and meaningful achievement. Also perfect option for solo travellers.

In summer trekking tours the water source is crystal clear streams and rivers. It is generally drinkable, but we recommend using a water filter or purification tablets. In winter drinking water is made by melting snow and boiling it.

We try to schedule our summer hiking tours for the time when the worst mosquito season is already over. We don’t like them either!

Travel insurance should cover all accidents, cancelled flights and any costs caused by interrupting the trip.

Ylläs is easy to reach. It is about a thirty minute drive from Kolari train station and from Kittilä airport. There is a bus connection to Ylläs from airport and railway station. We keep our group sizes small on our hiking tours. This allows us to offer as  personal as possible and high quality experience and service. The group size is also limited by the accommodation capacity. Our group size is usually 3-10 persons.

Contact us and we can talk more. If you have normal basic fitness, can do regular walking and maybe some running, and you do not injure yourself when lifting about twenty kilograms, you are very likely suitable for our tours.

It varies a lot! Sometimes we are moving in the area where you doesn’t have mobile connection.

In summer hikes we normally sleep in tents. Normally two people share a tent, although the tent size is meant for three.
