Departures for 2027

January 21. – 24..

Day 1 – arriving and meet up in Ylläsjärvi

Arriving in Kittilä airport / Kolari railway station in Finnish Lapland, both about 35 km away from Ylläsjärvi. Night at hotel accommodation (twin room, extra fee for single room) in Ylläsjärvi, home of Pihka Outdoors. We enjoy dinner together and conduct a safety briefing. Chance to do last minute shopping.

There are direct bus lines from the airport and train station to Ylläsjärvi, but for extra fee of 150 EUR we can collect you privately on our own van that fits 8 people.

Day 2 – start of the snowshoe tour

A good breakfast and one hour drive to the starting point in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Pack the pulkas and start the arctic adventure on snowshoes. The first day includes a fair amount of ascending to the open hills or fells as we call them. Lunch is dry food, you just add boiling water from your thermos bottle (all included). We stay the night at Nammalakuru reserved wilderness hut, without electricity or running water. Sleeping is in a dorm in bunk beds. The total distance today is 6-10km, depending on the route we take (according to weather and safety). In the evening and night there is very high chance of seeing the northern lights, if only the sky is clear.

Day 3 – Second day of snowshoe tour

Today we leave the pulkas at the hut and enjoy the surrounding wilderness with just backpacks and snowshoes. We summit some fells and admire the views – here you can see very far away into the wilderness with only forest and swamp areas in sight. We enjoy dryfood for lunch again and just have fun, play in the snow. Today there is a good chance to learn some winter survival skills if you are interested. We come back to the Nammalakuru hut for the second night in the wild. Distance: 2-5 km.

Day 4 – Last day of snowshoe tour

After breakfast at the warm hut, we pack our pulkas and start trekking back to civilisation. Today our path goes up and down, but mostly downhill, so not very strenuous. We either make our own path or follow a ready made one, depending on the weather conditions. Distance: 6-10 km. We reach the starting point and pack the van, and drive back to Ylläsjärvi, the same hotel where we started off. Enjoy a good wash at sauna and spa, and go for a well earned restaurant dinner.

Day 5.

Breakfast & Check-out in Ylläs, Finnish Lapland. End of adventure. Now you are ready to book the next level, the Arctic Ski Tour in Lapland   or the Snowshoe Expedition, both set in the northernmost Finnish Lapland, Kilpisjärvi region.

The nearest airport is Kittilä Airport, 35 km away, and Kolari train station is 37 km away. Both have bus connections to Ylläs. You can also book a private transfer through us for €150 – ask for more details

  • Two nights in a quality accommodation (two persons/room), 2 nights in wilderness huts (dorm).
  • All food (breakfast, lunch, dinner, small snacks). Dinner at the accommodation on two evenings.

You don’t need any snowshoeing background to join, but you should have a good level of fitness. Think of it as the effort of carrying a 15 kg backpack for about 10 km each day. Pulling the pulk isn’t too heavy, but the first day takes us up into the fells, well above the treeline — and you’ll definitely feel your heart pumping. Day two is much gentler, and by day three we’re mostly heading downhill.

  • Snowshoe equipment: Snowshoes, poles, boots, pulka for gear, goggles, down jacket if needed
  • Accommodation before and after the hike (comfortable hotel or B&B, depending on availability), nights in twin rooms, extra charge for single room
  • Accommodation during snowshoe expedition in dorm style wilderness cabin
  • Dinner & breakfast at accommodation upon arrival
  • Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for each day on trail
  • Clothing & Gear -list
  • Pihka Outdoors professional hiking guide
  • Video meeting with the group, Whatsapp group chat, help with packing
  • Transport to the starting point
  • Flights/train/bus to Ylläs, Finnish Lapland (nearest airport Kittilä only 35 km away)
  • Transportation to the accommodation (there is a direct bus from Kittilä airport to Ylläs, or we can organise a private airport transfer from Kittilä airport, ask more about this!)
  • Outdoor clothing (gear list will be provided)
  • Own travel and accident insurance (mandatory on this snowshoe tour)

After your booking, we’ll send you a detailed gear list and full expedition info.

Lapland snowshoe escape to remote wilderness

3- day guided snowshoeing tour in Pallas-Ylläs National Park

This all inclusive 3 day guided snowshoeing tour in Lapland is designed for travellers who want to experience remote wilderness in a safe and supported way. The tour takes place in Pallas Yllästunturi National Park, one of the most scenic winter areas in Finnish Lapland, located less than one hour from Kittilä International Airport.

You will snowshoe 3 to 10 km per day while pulling your own pulka with all essential gear. All meals, sleeping equipment and technical gear are included. You only need to bring your personal clothing according to a detailed packing list provided well in advance.

Comfortable nights in moody wilderness huts

This snowshoe tour begins with a meet up and safety briefing at a comfortable accommodation in Ylläsjärvi. After a good night’s sleep, we drive to the starting point of the snowshoeing trail and begin our easy tour into the wilderness.

During the first day, we snowshoe through magical old forests into open fell terrain and reach a remote wilderness hut. This hut will be our base for the next two nights. On the second day, we explore the surrounding landscapes without pulkas. Day snowshoeing with only light day packs allows us to move lighter and experience the vast scenery of Pallas Yllästunturi National Park from above the treeline. This day is just for enjoying!

Our pace and daily trail are adjusted according to weather conditions and the fitness level of the group. The focus is on steady movement, comfort and enjoying the environment rather than physical performance.

Wilderness nights and the Arctic atmosphere

Evenings are spent at the wilderness hut in a calm and comfortable atmosphere. The stove provides warmth, candles light the space, and there is time to relax and enjoy the quietness of the Arctic surroundings. With clear skies, there are good chances to see the Northern Lights. Local wildlife in the area includes mainly birds, reindeer and Arctic mammals that occasionally pass through the fells. It is nice to follow and see their tracks on the snow.

After breakfast on the final morning, we pack our pulkas and snowshoe back to the starting point. The tour ends in Ylläs, where you return to comfortable accommodation and have time to relax before departure.

Many guests describe this tour as a turning point. A first experience of Arctic wilderness that often leads to a desire to return for longer and more challenging journeys.

What is the wilderness hut like on this snowshoeing tour?

During this snowshoe tour we stay two nights at the reserved wilderness hut of Nammalakuru Wilderness Hut, located in the National Park.

The hut has no electricity or running water. Accommodation is shared in one room with dorm style bunk beds for up to 12 people. Mattresses, pillows and blankets are available, and Pihka Outdoors provides a warm sleeping bag for each participant.

Drinking water is collected from a well or melted from snow. The hut is heated with a wood burning stove, which also creates a warm and calm atmosphere in the evenings. Toilets are dry toilets located outside the hut. There are no showers.

Staying in a wilderness hut is a simple but comfortable way to experience Lapland’s backcountry.

Physical level and daily effort

No previous snowshoeing experience is required on this tour. However, a basic level of fitness and stamina is important to fully enjoy the tour. You can ask more from us.

Daily distances range from approximately 3 to 10 km. Your fitness level should be comparable to walking around 10 km per day while carrying a 15 kg backpack. The pulka is not heavy to pull, but the first day includes a steady ascent into open fell terrain above the treeline, which can feel physically demanding.

The second day is lighter, as we explore the area without pulkas, and the final day mainly consists of descending back to the starting point. The pace is calm and adjusted to the group, with regular breaks.

Weather Conditions in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park

Winter weather in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park can change quickly. The open fell landscape is largely treeless, which means wind is a common factor. Strong winds, snowfall and rapidly changing visibility are all possible.

Temperatures typically range from around 0°C down to -30°C. You may experience bright sunshine one day and winter storm conditions the next. Because of this, proper winter clothing and weatherproof gear are essential. We can help you to choose right ones.

Pihka Outdoors provides all technical equipment for the snowshoeing tour and can also lend warm down jackets if needed. We assist all participants with clothing choices well in advance to ensure safety and comfort in Arctic conditions.

We keep our group sizes small on our hiking tours. This allows us to offer as  personal as possible and high quality experience and service. The group size is also limited by the accommodation capacity. Our group size is usually 3-10 persons.
