What are fell skis?

Fell skis are designed for ski expeditions, day tours and exploring terrain off the groomed tracks. Fell skis are more robust compared to cross-country skis but not as robust as downhill skis. They typically have metal edges, allowing you to ski on icy and steep slopes. Fell skis are paired with sturdy backcountry boots, which resemble hiking boots in appearance. Fell skis are not alpine skis. We use these skis on our ski tours.

Gold Prospecting Hiking Tour is your unique chance to enjoy an easy yet meaningful escape in Lapland. We begin the hiking tour in nice and cosy accommodation so you can rest well before heading into the untouched nature. Once we enter the wilderness area, the marked paths disappear and we spend the week moving in complete solitude, following the terrain and choosing our route step by step. There are usually no other hikers, phones stop working and we travel entirely on nature’s terms. We camp where the weather and landscape guide us and live a simple wilderness routine focused only on what truly matters.

During the journey you may spot reindeer grazing and various autumn migratory and bird-of-prey species. As the evenings grow darker, the northern lights appear on most nights because this is the peak season for Aurora Borealis. We also ascend Mountain Ropi, 945m, which opens a wide panorama over the entire wilderness and provides a clear physical goal in the middle of the week.

Pihka Outdoors’ Cross Country Ski Tour to Halti is designed for adventure-driven skiers who want to test their physical and mental capacity in proper arctic winter conditions. You can join this tour if your general fitness is solid and your mindset toward winter trekking adventure is open. We begin the journey in cosy accommodation, where you have time to prepare yourself before transferring to starting point, Kilpisjärvi. From there, the slow and steady progression toward Finland’s highest point, Halti, begins.

We travel on cross country touring skis and pull pulkas, which naturally keeps the pace calm and consistent. The route follows a hut-to-hut rhythm and a safe itinerary has been planned in advance. Phone reception disappears shortly after entering the wilderness, which cuts everyday noise completely. Days unfold in a landscape of untouched snow and open fells, and the winter wilderness shows very clearly what real arctic nature feels like.
